En sortant de sa voiture après les faits, David Attias avait crié: "Je suis l'ange de la mort". Condamné dans un premier temps pour meurtre, il avait ensuite été jugé irresponsable et enfermé dans un hôpital psychiatrique.

In 2001, his son David Attias killed four people with his vehicle in the 2001 Isla Vista massacre. A civil case was brought against Dan and his wife, Diane for recklessly permitting David to drive their 1991 Saab 9000. 
On February 23, 2001, a vehicular assault occurred in the student community of Isla Vista, California, near the University of California, Santa Barbara, campus, killing four people and injuring one. The driver, David Attias, was sentenced to 60 years at a mental institution and was ruled to be released in September 2012.
